About Us
Click here to see the Teams of Computer Society. The computer society (then called Computer Club) of Madras Institute of Technology, Anna University, Chrompet was founded in 1983, by the students of non-InfoTech branches with a view of improving their knowledge in the field of computer science. Later, when the departments of Computer Science & Engineering and Information Technology were formed, the students from these courses also began to take part actively in the functioning of the society.
During its initial years, the society mainly concentrated in getting expertised with the basics of computers and programming languages such as C. Later it included the tools required by various streams like hardware designing and modeling software for the students of mechanical streams, circuit designing and simulation software for the students of electronic stream, etc. Over the years, the society has evolved, from being just an organization for imparting knowledge, to an active participant in the evolution and promotion of Free & Open Source Software (FOSS). The major event associated with this area is the conduction of the inter-college free software festival Carte Blanche every year. Last year, an audio conference with Richard M Stallman was organized as a part of this. It was an interactive session where he answered various questions related to software freedom. A visit by the same person to our college was organized in the year 2004.
Vision:
- Computer Society will be the preferred partner for industries in all spheres connected with students including internships, projects and event collaborations.
- Other students of MIT as well as other colleges will look up to Computer Society fellows to solve their computer related problems.
- Computer Society fellows will be infinitely better than other MIT students in their chosen field.
Teams
This year, the society has taken up new initiatives and new teams have been formed in this regard.
- The Tamil Computing Team, which is one such, is aimed at the creation & development of softwares that make Tamil as compatible a language with the computers as English, making language not a hindrance to use computers.
- The Software development / FOSS Team is another such team dedicated purely for contributing to and promotion of FOSS and creating awareness among the students.
- The Robotics Team is meant for guiding and encouraging the interests of students practising robotics related activities.
